SOME THOUGHTS ON OUR SPIRITUAL DIET

You’ve probably heard the old adage, “You are what you eat.” This is true in a physical sense—when we eat junk food, we can get flabby. Eat healthy and get lean. We can say the same about our spiritual diet. The spiritual "food" we consume can often determine our spiritual health and development.

When we're new to faith, we need to be spoon fed with the elementary truths of our faith and learn the basic habits that'll shape our lives in Christ. The Apostle Peter was writing to spiritual infants when he penned these words:

“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good” (1 Peter 2:2, 3).

I thank God for people like Carol Immel, David Streets, Alma Romsberg, Ken Volmer and my parents, who took the time to spoon feed me my early spiritual diet. They are the folks who gave me an appetite for God’s word, taught me how to pray, made sure I was in worship, and taught me the basics of following Jesus. Any maturity I have in faith today—can be credited to their teaching and modeling.

Å basic diet of spiritual milk is important for the young Christian, but it’s essential that we improve and enhance our spiritual diet as we follow Jesus. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews lamented the failure of some followers to mature:

“In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil” (Hebrews 5:12-14).

One of the best indicators of spiritual vitality is a craving for God’s Word. Sadly, many who believe in Jesus refuse to grow up in their salvation, which doesn’t please our Heavenly Father. To make our Father proud, we must feast on His Word and do what it says. The moment we believe in Jesus Christ is the time we need to start growing up in Him.

Watch your diet and eat wisely, my friends!
