Prevenient Grace -- by Pastor Burt
Updated: Sep 28
As mentioned in last week’s blog we are entering a three-week series on Grace. As descendants in faith from John Wesley the founder of Methodism, we talk about Grace in three distinct ways, realizing that each is a facet of God’s unmerited love for us. These three facets are Prevenient Grace, Justifying Grace, and Sanctifying Grace. In 1 John 4:10-19 we see the disciple John write about each of these though he does not use these terms.
This coming Sunday the 18th of September we will talk about how Prevenient Grace has been and is active in our lives and the lives of others. As we do so we will discover again God’s great love for us and all of humanity.
I invite you to read the passage and this week to contemplate what it means for God to love us, even before we knew him or loved Him. How does the knowledge that His love precedes our own invite us to love Him and bind us to Him? In our earthly relationships is it easier for us to love those who love us first and express that love before we do? How can you be a conduit for God’s love to those who do not yet know him and are not aware of the ways in which God is calling to them out of love?
I am looking forward to talking with you about prevenient grace this Sunday!
