Forget You Part 1

Week #1: Forget You
We polish our profile, update our status, and craft an ideal version of our life to share with the world. What if we have it all backwards? Let’s learn how to find our real value when shift our focus in a better direction with the series, “Forget You.”
Key Points:
-To mature physically we must INCREASE, but to mature spiritually, we must DECREASE!
BIG IDEA: I measure my value by HIS increase!
Jesus must become greater and greater!
Being less about Me and more about Jesus means:
-I Move My Focus
-I Loose My Stuff
-I Lose My Life
**God will not forget you!
Further Conversation:
1. How do you usually feel when someone else receives more recognition than you for something you both did?
2. Read John 3:22-30. How does John see himself and his value/worth? Why do you think this challenged John’s followers?
3. Who is a person you know who makes life more about Jesus and less about them? What can we learn from their humility?
4. Read Hebrews 12:2a & Matthew 6:24 & 10:39. What things keep you from focusing more on Jesus? What is the hardest part about shifting your focus away from yourself and onto Christ?
5. Read Isaiah 49:18-19. In what ways has God reminded you that He has not and will not forget you?
6. Restate the BIG IDEA in your own words. What steps do you need to take this week to start focusing less on yourself and more on Christ? How will you remind yourself?
Daily Devotions: Go Deeper this Week
Monday – Luke 1:26-38
Our circumstances can be deceiving. From the outside, Mary is an unwed teenage mother who will give birth in a barn, flee from her country, endure hardship, and watch her first born brutally beaten and murdered. But what we know is that God will save humanity through the child Mary births. Mary was highly favored. Don’t base your value on your circumstances. How is God’s favor helping you accomplish God’s purpose in your life?
Pray: Almighty God, thank you for your promise of your presence and power for your purpose with me.
Tuesday – Genesis 39:1-4
Joseph is beaten and sold into slavery. That’s a pretty bad season in life. Joseph could have become bitter. Where have you questioned God’s love and favor in your life? Fortunately, Joseph did not lose heart. God would work in and through Jospeh to save Joseph’s family and all of Egypt. When our circumstances grow challenging, we tend to feel abandoned or defeated. Often, those are opportunities for God’s purpose to blossom. How are you experiencing God’s favor for God’s purposes in your life right now?
Pray: Heavenly Father, help me trust that your favor rests on me and that your presence is with me.
Wednesday – Psalm 23
This is one of the most often read and well known of the Psalms. We find comfort in the words “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…you are with me.” Psalm 23 reminds us that our only comfort and security in life is God’s presence with us. When God favors us, when God promises to be present, to provide power for His purpose through us, we have nothing to fear. What concerns occupy your mind at this moment? How can you find God’s favor in these moments, knowing God is with you?
Pray: Holy Spirit, remind me that even in the valley of the shadow of death, you are with me.
Thursday – Acts 7:46-47
Few people knew God’s favor like King David. Scripture has God calling David “a man after my own heart.” David is literally one of God’s favorites. As Stephen recites the history of Israel, he reveals an interesting truth about God’s favor…we won’t always get what we want. David wanted to build the Temple. David had the resources, the influence, and the position to build the Temple. But David lacked permission. God’s favor is not a license or an expectation that we will get what we want. No, it is trust that God will accomplish in us and through us what God wants. What does God want for you & through you?
Pray: LORD Jesus, may I always be a person after your heart, trusting in your grace and favor for me.
Friday – Ephesians 1:3-10
Reread these verses a couple times. Let what God is doing in you and me through Christ soak into our soul. Look at what God is doing. What does it say about God that God would go to all this effort and shed such incredible grace? What does it say about how God sees you, that God would choose you? Do you believe God chose you?
Pray: Heavenly Father, help me embrace the idea that you love me, like me, and chose me.
Saturday – Psalm 30
“His anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime.” I love this verse. I do get angry with my children. They can be disobedient, frustrating, and self-centered. I want better for them. So I do discipline. I seek to train them. I allow them to be challenged. But I do it because I love them, and I always will. Do you see difficultly and challenge as God smiling upon you, loving you, and training you? Do you know God’s favor?
Pray: LORD God, may I learn quickly in your discipline that you are smiling on me and loving me!
